65 Points is Just the Entry Bar

65 points only gets you into the SkillSelect pool - it does not guarantee an invitation. Most invited candidates in 2026 have scored well above the minimum. The strongest levers are a higher English band (Proficient or Superior), more skilled work experience, a specialist STEM qualification, and a state or territory nomination (+5 to +15).

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About
Australia Points Test — From India.

What is the Australia points test and how much is needed?

The points test scores candidates for General Skilled Migration visas (subclass 189, 190 and 491) out of a practical maximum of 130+ points. 65 points is the minimum to enter the SkillSelect pool, but competitive invitation rounds in 2026 have generally needed 75-95+ points.

What factors make up the points test?

Age (up to 30), English language (up to 20), skilled employment (up to 20), education (up to 20), Australian study requirement (5), STEM specialist qualification (10), community language accreditation (5), regional study (5), partner skills (up to 10), and state or territory nomination (5 or 15). Use our calculator above to see your exact breakdown across every factor.

Can I claim points for both overseas and Australian work experience?

No. The Department of Home Affairs only counts one employment category - whichever of overseas or Australian skilled employment gives you the higher score. You cannot add both together.

Does a state or territory nomination increase my points?

Yes. A state or territory nomination for subclass 190 adds 5 points, while nomination for the regional subclass 491 visa adds 15 points, since regional migration is prioritised.

How can I improve my Australia points score from India?

Options include: 1) Improve your IELTS/PTE band to reach Proficient or Superior English, 2) Gain more skilled work experience in your nominated occupation, 3) Complete a specialist STEM Masters or Doctorate, 4) Apply for a state or regional nomination, 5) Claim partner skill points if eligible. Manzil Immigration identifies the best strategy in a free consultation.

Does having a partner increase or decrease my points?

A partner can only add points, never subtract. If your partner is an Australian citizen/PR, or if you have no partner, you get 10 points automatically. If your partner has their own positive skills assessment plus competent English, you also get 10 points; competent English alone gives 5 points.
