Express Entry 2026 Changes: New Categories Explained
What Is Express Entry?
Express Entry is Canada's online system for skilled immigrants. It manages applications for three federal programs:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
It also covers part of the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) . Your profile is ranked by your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score , and the highest-ranked candidates receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for PR.
What Changed in 2026? (Summary)
- 10 category-based draw categories are active for 2026.
- 5 are new, and 3 of the new ones need Canadian work experience (physicians, researchers, senior managers).
- 5 are renewed from 2025: French-language proficiency, healthcare and social services, STEM, trades, and education.
- Express Entry is now less about CRS score alone. Your occupation and language skills matter a lot.
- Points for arranged employment (job offers) were removed in March 2025, and they are still not part of the CRS.

The 5 Renewed Categories
Always check the exact list of eligible NOC codes on the IRCC website. Occupation lists can change between years.
What Does This Mean for Indian Applicants?
- If you are inside Canada (study or work permit): Canadian work experience is now more valuable than ever, especially for the physician, researcher and senior manager categories.
- If you are outside Canada: French and your occupation (healthcare, STEM, trades) are your best levers. Many Indian candidates fit the STEM and healthcare categories.
- If your CRS is below the general draw cut-offs: Check whether you qualify for a category. Your chances can be much better there.
- Senior managers: Without job offer points, you can lose out on points for age. The new Canadian-experience category may help.
Other Important Changes to Watch
- NOC update: Statistics Canada has said the 2026 NOC update will be published in December 2026. Some occupation codes and TEER levels may change, which can affect your eligibility.
- New English test for Express Entry: Language test options are being updated. Check IRCC for accepted tests before you book.
- Reserved PR spaces for people already in Canada: The Levels Plan sets aside 33,000 PR spaces for in-Canada applicants for 2026-2027.
- Proposed new federal high-skilled class: Reports suggest the three federal programs may eventually be replaced by one class. This is not final, so follow official IRCC updates.
- Stronger focus on PNP draws: Provincial nominee candidates continue to receive invitations through Express Entry.
How to Prepare Your Profile (6 Steps)
- Check your NOC code carefully. A wrong code can make you ineligible.
- Get your ECA (Educational Credential Assessment) for foreign education.
- Take a language test (IELTS General / CELPIP / PTE Core). Aim for CLB 9 or higher.
- Consider learning French. It adds CRS points and opens the French category.
- Create or update your Express Entry profile. Make sure the information matches your documents exactly.
- Explore PNP options. A nomination adds 600 CRS points.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Entering the wrong NOC code or TEER level.
- Counting work experience that doesn't meet IRCC's rules.
- Assuming a high CRS score is enough without checking categories.
- Not updating the profile after a new test result.
- Misrepresentation of any kind, which can lead to a 5-year ban.
