Who Can Sponsor a Spouse or Partner?
- You are at least 18 years old
- You are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person registered under the Indian Act
- Permanent residents must live in Canada; citizens living abroad must show they plan to return when your partner becomes a PR
- You are not in prison, bankrupt, or under a removal order
- You are not receiving social assistance (other than for a disability)
- You have not defaulted on a past sponsorship undertaking or support payments
Who Can Be Sponsored?
- Spouse: legally married, and the marriage is genuine and valid
- Common-law partner: lived together continuously for at least 12 months
- Conjugal partner: in a relationship for 12+ months but unable to live together due to legal or immigration barriers
- The relationship is genuine and not entered into mainly for immigration purposes
- The applicant passes medical, criminal and security checks
Note: Spousal sponsorship generally has no minimum income requirement, but you must sign an undertaking to financially support your spouse or partner for 3 years. Sponsors living in Quebec have additional provincial steps.
